This project brought the excitement back into my art process. I loved the costuming and detail in the Prince Caspian movie and I knew I just needed to paint Peter's armor. When I saw this pose, I couldn't help but think of the works by Gustave Moreau--it was inspired by his painting "Orpheus" and is somewhat an homage to it: [link] I've always loved Moreau's work (I'll never forget the first time I saw his Oedipus and the Sphinx at the Met) and in the same manner that he ventured into symbolist art by portraying scenes from mythology, I long to capture 19th and 20th century stories and folklore in my work. This project brought that goal back to life, and although I am classifying this as fanart, when I move into my new studio, I can assure you that I will be creating more like this using my own vision of characters and my own models, and my own source photos.

I originally wanted to make this a 6ft tall pastel drawing, but given the space that I'm in now, the logistics were near impossible. Now, I have several old kitchen cabinet doors that a friend had pulled out of the trash for art purposes...she moved and couldn't take them with her so naturally I took them off her hands. When my drawing idea fell through, I thought long and hard about how I was going to execute this project....and then it hit me: Narnia => Wardrobe => Door...door! I had all of these little doors! So there you have it. I think I'm going to see about getting a cabinet made up specifically for this door....but what to keep inside.....hmmm.....

Here are the various sources I have used for the scene:

EDIT: I've changed the front foot. I hated the way it looked before and I finally fixed it. You can see the process in my art blog: [link]

High King of Narnia by *hever: From the suggester: "The amount of work *hever put into this piece is truly admirable. When you read the description you'll see links to various references, the idea behind painting this on a cabinet door, and you'll find out that she sculpted the lion on the handle herself. This is a beautiful and well thought out piece of fan art that really showcases the amount of talent this artist possesses. As for the painting itself: great composition, lovely choice of colours and very evident creativity." ( Suggested by =silber-englein and Featured by $aunjuli )

The attention to detail is incredible. The lion handle on the door is a nice touch too

What's great painting! I worked on the first two films and love too see other artists offering up their own work on such a great set of stories :)

Thanks so much! And can I just say I'm completely jealous -- I absolutely adore the art of those films. I'm a scenic artist and most of my work comes from an avant-garde theatre, so the designs tend to be contemporary...which means I pretty much paint things solid colors on a day to day basis. So needless to say, I tend to fall in love with beautiful intricacies in films and sometimes I can't resist painting them. Many thanks for your contributions to these films -- they are definitely an inspiration. :)

wow! this is awesome! his armor, the plants, the rocks, the ground, the plants....increedible! loved the way you've finished it, adding a frame, the words and, of course, the handle. a true Narnian piece! you should take it back to Cair Paravel, where it belongs! (before I can steal it)!
