Parasitic Slug by hever Parasitic Slug by hever
I've been seriously considering going to prop making for films...not that I know anything about making props. But I've always wanted to learn and I've already started teaching myself.
I have an interview with a movie producer later this week about working on a horror/sci-fi/thriller about an outbreak of parasitic slugs. Ok, not really my thing, but gory things are really fun to make. So here is my maquette of said slug.

Hah. It's so funny...I hadn't thought about that film in years until today and I was actually looking up clips on YouTube earlier. St. Kitten is haunting me, so it seems ;)

Thanks--they hired me as the art director, we filmed it in September/October and it is currently in post-production. You can watch the trailer here: [link]
Sadly, I had nothing to do with any of the slugs...but I helped design/decorate sets, build effects, and craft props. :)

I think I'll throw another "EWWWW" into the fray. This is really well done. It looks like it's crawling around on vomit.

Hurrah!
The director and movie producer seemed to really like it. But it doesn't look like they're going to hire me on as propmaster...instead they thought ART DIRECTOR would be more appropriate for me. :D Fingers crossed that they get back to me about that.

Thanks...it helped...because I got the job! :)

(Now I just hope that I can take it...I have an interview for a full time art therapy position and I don't know how they'd feel about hiring me knowing I couldn't start until mid-October....so fingers crossed that I won't have to choose between the two jobs!)

Yeah--I thought so too. I was cracking up laughing as I was making.
The producer and director seemed to really like it. However, it doesn't look like they are going to hire me as the propmaster...instead, they felt ART DIRECTOR was more appropriate :) I still have to hear back from them, but fingers crossed!

Super sculpey, painted with acrylic paint, and sealed with decoupage gloss. The goo under it is liquid latex rubber that I fried with a heat gun and then painted with glass paint.

Wow thats so realistic . you should definatly consider the course. They have that course at my college and it looks really fun. We work with the model makers. They get to do such cool stuff. You already have heaps of material you could use for a portfolio so Id say go for it! It can be hard to get work in that area but once you gert your foot in the dorr your pretty much sorted ;)

Thanks. I may look into a course, but for now I'm going to learn by doing. We'll see how it all works out.
