Just another mindless attempt to get better at painting. Ugh. As of now, I'm reduced to making "fanart" because graduate school is intense (like a fire at the circus...get it? get it?? yeah, you get it) and I don't have the time/space/money to hire models and set up my own compositions. I graduate with my masters in May, so hopefully after that I can start doing some hardcore art. Until then, I'm just going to work on technique.
I chose this particular image to work from because it's a simple frontal portrait with crisp lighting. I know it's not as interesting or dramatic as other paintings I've done, but I really wanted to focus on getting the shapes and skin tones right. It gave me a lot of trouble...but I think it pulled through okay.
I spent a lot of time glazing this one--something I usually rush to finish, which I shouldn't. This is the first painting I've done using my daylight lamp--best. investment. ever. (considering that the lighting in my apartment is horrible) Hurrah!
EDIT: I've gone back in into this painting and have done some substantial work to it. There were some minor, minor, minor, proportional problems that were driving me nuts. I also wanted to even out the blotchy spots of the skin tones, and really bring out the intensity of the eyes. I also went back into the hair. Perhaps down the line I will see more ways of improving it...
My main concern is if I've captured the likeness of this actor...so...have I?
great work. i have no crits, the skin tones and the face in general work perfectly. something bothers me about the background, but i can't say what exactly. i think it's because it's in the same tone as the skin. (thats what i love about photoshop: you could simply change that and see how it looks better)
wow, great work on the eyes! the concentration of detail there really makes it intense, locks the viewer in his gaze.
my only couple of crits are that the eye falls off the picture plane too quickly because of that light line going down the middle of the piece off the bottom from the face- the neck and shirt and chin. if there were a darker shadow somewhere to stop it, the viewer could look up again.
and is that a toothpick in his mouth? it's a bit unclear.. sort of looks like something happened to the canvas
this portrait is amazing to say the least, you totally captured him. I am extremely jealous and inspired at the same time =] his eyes are incredibly intense you have some serious talent
Beautiful painting!
