Description

So.
My husband sat me down and made me watch Firefly. I bet he wish he hadn't now.
(For those who don't get the reference: [link] )

This was a fun little project to test out some scenic painting aging techniques in the realm of classical portraiture. I distress things all the time at work, but because of the nature of the designs (and the unfortunate increasing demand for theatrical scenery to be printed), I rarely get the chance to do anything more than paint solid colors.

I wanted to create a sort of retro/vintage billboard sort of thing, so I looked at a a bunch of advertisements from the 40's and 50's as well as some Norman Rockwell paintings to get the right kind of vibe. There was initially more to my design, but with the way the texture came out, I decided to keep it simple so as not to make it all too busy.

A number of steps went into this piece - a lot of layering and glazing with age washes and rust colors - and a variety of materials were used from latex house paints to acrylics to Rosco super-saturated scenic paints...all applied on a piece of masonite. The crackling effect was done using sodium silacate -- I almost wish it hadn't set up so fast and I got a little more of the base rust color coming through.

Anyway...enjoy!

UPDATE: I just want to thank everyone for all of the favorites and very kind words regarding this piece. I'm honored to receive this DD and floored by such an enthusiastic reception from the dA community. :)
