h'ok. So this was a nerdy little idea that spawned out of the boredom of traveling for hours upon hours over the holidays which exploded into a full blown project. I started it on the train, worked on it as I inhabited my parents' house for a week, and then I was given a graphics tablet so it just went on from there...
Although I had attempted some digital art once before a year or so ago, I consider this my first real effort at digital portraiture. And yes, I still prefer traditional techniques.
On a side note, I had this really fantastic idea for the background which involved an intricate stone wall with a stained glass window, but as I worked on it, I became incredibly frustrated and realized it was going to be too busy. I settled for the background I have now, but it may change in the future.
Done in Photoshop. Reference for the background by ~VivaStock
Ho-lee crap... This was a *first* attempt at a serious digital portrait? There's not enough green paint in the world to cover my envy. LOL Awesome stuff...if you ever happen to make a tutorial for your technique...
Thanks very much. I fear I'm not qualified to do a tutorial since I'm just learning myself and I'm not sure I'll ever be since I actually find digital painting to be a bit of a bore...haha
I just wanted to thank you for all of your comments on the variety of pieces in my galley---I know it's a little late, but this new message center makes it such a pain to catch up. But better late than never I guess. Anyway, I'm so glad that you liked a variety of my work and it was very nice of you to take the time to leave me thoughtful comments. I figured it would be easier for both of us if I left you a big THANKS rather than a bunch of little random replies. Take care and thanks again.
Another great piece! I love the depth of character you can see on his face, particularly the eyes
