Here's my pop culture rendition of the Two of Pentacles tarot card with an "American Horror Story: Freakshow" twist for the upcoming Arcana show at the Uforge Gallery in Boston (opens Jaunary 9th and runs until February 1st): www.facebook.com/events/372081…
I chose this card for the Jimmy Darling character, not because he epitomizes the meaning of the card, but the card seems to stand for everything he needs. (You can read a detailed meaning of the Two of Pentacles here: www.biddytarot.com/tarot-card-… )Within Jimmy's story, he struggles (poorly) with keeping balance. He juggles between wanting to leave the freakshow to start a normal life and loyalty to his identity as a freak. He juggles between wanting to be a leader but also being dependent. He juggles with the potential of who he could be and a damned, drunken existence because of how he was born. He is conflicted and flawed-- and the thing he needs most is the strength to balance.
The painting is acrylic, metal leaf, and rust on wood panel. 16”x28” All distressing effects are done by hand. I used multiple reference photos including American Horror Story: Freakshow (2014) screen captures and a Tribeca Film Festival portrait found at evanpeters.org/ as well as my own photos (I have a wonderfully patient husband that poses for me). Fonts were referenced from www.dafont.com.
